I love that inspiration for wool appliqué patterns can come from so many things. A button inspired the pattern I have to share with you today! Not just any regular button of course, a Just Another Button Company handmade clay button! The September Button Lover’s Club: Words with Buttons box features an amazing handmade moth button. Cecile (the chief buttoneer at JABC) first made it 10 years ago. It stayed in her stash waiting for the right time to début. That time finally came when they chose the word “dream” and a fabric collection that featured moths for their September Button Lover’s Club. From the moment I first saw Cecile’s moth button, I knew I just had to use it as the inspiration for my Dream wool appliqué project!
The fun thing about this pattern is that it is very dimensional and full of layers and different textures, just like a real moth. The wings have cut-outs that allow a fabric layer (Twilight from 1 Canoe 2 for Moda) to peek through.
The only piece stitched to the base is the body. I simply tacked in place so that they seem to hover over the surface. A piece of wire inside the antennae makes it possible to shape them.
The upper wings have a gentle curve as if in mid-flight. I love the graceful curve that it has and the way you can get a peek at the lower wing under it.
My base fabric is a piece of Week’s Dye Works Weavers Cloth. I recently discovered weavers cloth and am in love with it! It has the look of a nice piece of linen (which I use for bases often) for a fraction of the price! It is a lovely and more budget friendly foundation choice.
I chose to display my finished piece in an embroidery hoop. The pattern for the moth includes tips for working with hoops as frames for stitchery pieces.
And of course, I couldn’t finish this piece with out adding button embellishments. All the buttons I used are from the September Button Lover’s Club: Words with Buttons Dream button box.
I hope you find the pattern as magical as I do! You can download the pattern for FREE and find helpful supply links in my online store: Afterlight Flight 3D Moth Wool Appliqué Pattern.
