When I think about July, of course I think about the 4th of July, fireworks, and red, white, and blue buntings hanging on front porch rails. And of course you can’t have a good ol’ American summer without county fairs and blue ribbons. Most importantly, I also think about “pride”. No matter what is happening in politics and government, I feel pride in my country and what it stands for. Those are the things that July means to me and what inspired me this month as I designed this month’s Heartfelt pattern.
In keeping with my softer color palette, I chose soft shades of cream, red, and blue. Of course the colors are flexible so the pattern could be stitched with bolder colors for anyone who likes a bolder or more traditional palette.
This simple little stitch detail on the wavy trim turned out to be one of my favorite bits on this piece. I added it out of wanting to stitch this thin trim with something other than my go-to blanket stitch. I ended up adding a simple series of straight stitches that ran from one side of the trim to the other at an angle. After stitching I realized that they reminded me of the pattern on the side of the drums you see depicted in photos of revolutionary soldiers. It felt like a perfect touch that was totally a bit of happenstance!
Each month I challenge myself to find a different way to add a border to the hearts. This month I knew I wanted to add a pleated trim that would be like the trim on a blue ribbon. Finding a way to execute it easily without it being super bulky was the real trick! I think I found a great way to do that is so easy to do. Since my patterns all feature step-by-step photo instructions, you will be making pleated wool trim in no time!
I absolutely adore this jumbo button from Just Another Button Company. It has a stamped design that reminded me of fireworks. A light application of ink was added show off the design and mimic the night sky. An extra large handmade star button layered on top adds even more dimension.
I love that this month’s Heartfelt design has a vintage feel. It feels so old fashioned to me! I love too that it has so much dimension. I can’t wait to frame it and hang it in my studio.
The pattern for this month’s Heartfelt block is now available in my pattern shop. The download has 18 pages of step-by-step instructions with photos. It is like taking a class and pattern all in one! Best of all, it is only $5! Buy it here –> Heartfelt: Pride Wool Appliqué Pattern
