I love fall! I love the crispness in the air and watching the leaves flow in the wind and dance all over the ground. My neighbor hood is fill of large magnificent Oak trees that sprinkle the ground with acorns. I enjoy watching the squirrels work to try to gather them all and stash them away. It is like a fun game of Beat the Clock, trying to get enough put away before winter blows in.
To celebrate fall, I’ve created this cute and dimensional wool appliqué pattern that is now available in my shop. This fun and quick pattern looks so cute hanging on a wall in a hoop for a frame. It would also look great on a throw pillow or fabric banner. No matter how you use it, it is sure to add a fun touch of fall to your decor!
Fall Acorn Wool Appliqué Pattern Details
There are several fun details in this pattern that I think really add to the charm. You might notice the white peeking out from under the edges… that is natural cotton quilt batting. I’ve added it to the layers of the acorn to give it a puffier look. One of the things that is perfectly fall to me is sitting on a hay ride on a chilly fall night bundled in a quilt. The batting edges are a subtle nod to the warmth and coziness of a quilt.
I love the symbolism of hearts so I add them to nearly (if not all) of my projects. On this project, I’ve tucked a little wool roving in the heart to give it dimension. There is a bit tucked under the top of the acorn too to give it shape.
Mix in a little texture and detail…
You can add the stitching detail on the cap by machine or by hand. I used my machine on this project since there is so much of it. I added the stitching so that it would add detail like that of a real acorn cap. I also wanted it to look quilty as another subtle nod to quilts.
The embellishments on the acorn are from this month’s Button Lover’s Club: Words with Buttons box from Just Another Button Company. I used the hand-dyed buttons to add extra texture to the acorn cap. I’ve used the club letter buttons and several of the handmade leaf buttons to accent the edge of the acorn.
The wool, gingham linen, and embroidery floss are all from Weeks Dye Works. If you don’t have a local source for them, you can purchase their products online at The Silver Needle. You can check out the full supply list on the shop page for this pattern.
