I love a project that lets me add something new to something old. A few years ago, I created my first “spool book” as a trade show sample. I loved it so much that I decided that I would have one in my display every year after that. This year I created a small wool appliqué version embellished with dies from my Spellbinders Sew Sweet die collection. When I make spool books for a display, I usually just decorate the end and save the inner part for later. I like to fill them with little vintage treasures and tokens. I think I will add some of my favorite vintage pearl buttons to this one to keep with the mostly cream theme.
The base of the design starts with a Prim Heart layered with the heart from the Sew Sweet Valentine set. I added a small banner and flowers from the Sew Sweet Valentine set. All of the elements were die cut from wool (Weeks Dye Works).
I added Mint hand-dyed buttons to pick up the color of the leaves. I added a handmade bird button and handmade pin to bring in more color and add a bit of whimsy. All buttons and the pin are from Just Another Button Company.
Along the lower edge of the banner I added trims from the Sew Sweet Trims set. I embellished all the edges using a blanket stitch and added tiny seed beads (Mill Hill Petites) along the scalloped edge for sweet and tiny detail. The beads are my favorite detail, they have been in my craft stash untouched for YEARS. It was so fun to pull them out and enjoy them again!
This was such a fun and easy project to make. Since the “hard” part of an appliqué project is hand cutting all the shapes, this one is a breeze because every element is die cut! It takes what would take you an hour or more and shortens it into minutes! That is kind of awesome in my book!
